How are Black Businesses faring in Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Houston and other Metro Areas in Texas?   The Metro Areas around Dallas and Houston lead the way in terms of Black Business ownership as well as sales volume.

How do the businesses in these two areas compare to those in the other 22 Metropolitan Statistical Areas in Texas?   Even more so, how do the statistics for Black Businesses compare to those for businesses owned by other Racial/Ethnic groups in each of the 24 Metro Areas in Texas?

The business data presented here is from the U.S. Census Bureau 2012 Survey of Business Owners (SBO).   The 2012 SBO provides the most comprehensive business data available now.

2017 business data is scheduled to be released by the U.S. Census Bureau in December 2019 in the form of the Annual Business Survey (ABS).

Consequently, the tables presented here are sourced from the most recent comprehensive survey of both businesses with paid employees and for those businesses that do not have paid employees.

Businesses With Paid Employees vs Those Without Paid Employees by Race/Ethnicity

These tables look at how businesses are proportioned between those with paid employees vs those without paid employees, within racial/ethnic ownership groups.

The significant data point is the low percentage, within the universe of Black-Owned businesses, of those that have paid employees vs those who do not.   Only 4.2% of Black-Owned businesses in Texas have paid employees.   Whereas Asian-Owned and White-Owned businesses are at 25.7% and 20.6% respectively for the same metric.   This is extremely significant when considering the large sales volume gap between businesses that have paid employees vs businesses with no paid employees.

Rankings for Black-Owned Businesses in Texas Metro Areas

In General

The United States Census Bureau identified 24 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) in Texas that had Black-Owned businesses.   Both Metro Areas, Houston/The Woodlands/Sugar Land (91,589) and Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington (80,944), individually had more Black-Owned Businesses than the remaining 22 Metro Areas combined (34,085).

Houston/The Woodlands/Sugar Land ($4.375 billion) and Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington ($4.271 billion), also had more Annual Receipts/Sales than the other 22 MSAs combined ($2.3 billion).

For Black businesses that had paid employees, Houston/The Woodlands/Sugar Land and Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington combined to have 72.6% of the total businesses and 78.1% of the total sales volume for the State.

Stratification of Businesses with Paid Employees vs Businesses with No Paid Employees

The stratification of businesses to view the dichotomy of those with paid employees vs those without revealed almost no difference between Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington and Houston/The Woodlands/Sugar Land when looking at the number of businesses.

However, when viewing the sales volume for the two largest MSAs, Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington had 63.3% come from businesses with paid employees, while Houston/The Woodlands/Sugar Land had 59.7% come from that source.

Average Annual Sales Volumes

Comparing the Average Net Annual Sales (after deducting payroll) for businesses with paid employees with the Average Annual Sales for those businesses that did not have paid employees reveals stark differences for every MSA for which the sales data was available.

For businesses that did not have employees, the highest Average Annual Sales volume was in Austin/Round Rock for $27,598. But the lowest Average Net Sales for those businesses with paid employees was $375,116 in San Antonio/New Braunfels.

This table also reveals a significant difference between Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington and Houston/The Woodlands/Sugar Land in terms of Average Net Annual Sales at $699,249 and $516,015 respectively
